History
St. John Villa Academy, owned
and operated by the Sisters
of St. John the Baptist, is
located on the north shore of Staten
Island, in the town of Arrochar, overlooking the Verrazano –
Narrows Bridge.
St. John Villa
Academy, was founded in 1922, when "Clair Manor" in
Arrochar, Staten Island was purchased by the Sisters of St. John
the Baptist.
In September 1923, the
Sisters opened a school called St. John’s Novitiate and Boarding
School. The first elementary school class graduated in June 1926
and by the early 1930’s, high school classes were added.
The School campus has
grown since "Clair Manor’s" acquisition in 1922.
Additions include: the construction of
the current elementary school building in 1931, a new chapel
in 1938, the high school building in 1957, and in the mid-1980s
the gym was completed.
Today, it is a private, Catholic
elementary school and high school proud
of its long tradition of quality education for the children of
Staten Island and Brooklyn. Currently, St. John Villa Academy has
a strong enrollment of
approximately 267 boys and girls in the elementary school and 615
young women in the high school.
Villa’s
commitment to educating students for the future is evident in
every classroom, from the available state-of-the-art computer
technology, new textbooks, to the Advanced Placement courses,
Scholar’s Program and the Science Discovery Institute, in the
high school.
The academic program has been enriched
with new and revised courses and is increasingly coordinated grade
to grade. The School combines this academic program with a wide
range of artistic, athletic, and intellectual activities. St.
John Villa offers students the experiences and skills they need to
face the challenges of tomorrow. In smaller classes, teachers
create a warm and supportive atmosphere that encourages an
individual’s potential, promotes religious values and fosters
responsibility, integrity, respect and service to others.
